Basic and Executive Designs

EngeLíneas has extensive experience in the execution of overhead lines of electric power transmission designs, in high and ultra high voltage, alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC), comprising from preliminary engineering studies, through the Basic Design to the Executive Design, whatever is the interface between such phases. Among the frequent services in these steps, one can cite:
- establishment of design criteria in order to ensure the required reliability;
- studies of route alternatives for the TL on available images, focusing on the global optimization of the TL, including aspects from the perspective of the Executive Design, environmental licensing and the ROW – Right Of Way negotiations;
- electrical studies of conductor alternatives;
- basic electrical calculations for conductors: thermal limit for normal and emergency operation, losses, impedance parameters and other major electrical parameters;
- evaluation of electric field parameters on the conductor surface for associated calculations: corona, radio interference (RI) and audible noise (AN), EMF – electric and magnetic field calculations;
- basic studies for the establishment of design wind speeds and their return periods: for the insulation coordination, for the structural loads acting on towers and tension conditions of cables;
- insulation coordination studies and critical electrical distances for the geometry of the structure head and distances between phases, including aspects associated with the asynchronous movement;
- calculation of TL performance to atmospheric lightning impulse and switching overvoltage;
- establishment of basic silhouette for the structural calculations of the structures;
- mechanical calculations of cables (tensions, sags, etc.);
- elaboration of the set of loading cases for structural calculations of the towers;
- pre-dimensioning studies of towers (especially the most frequent suspension), estimating weights and loads acting in the foundations to choose the best conductor alternative;
- technical and conceptual interaction of approaches, design criteria, calculation methodology, etc., with the companies responsible for specific studies and projects (such as: design of the damping system; design of the OPGW system; structural design of the towers; etc.) in order to obtain the global optimization of the TL;
- elaboration of technical specifications of the main components, topography services, soil investigation and TL construction (and/or adaptation of standard technical specifications of the contractor), adjusting them to the project specificities;
- establishment of typical soil parameters for the foundation design;
- optimized structure spotting of TL (an ‘initial spotting’ aiming field conference and a ‘final spotting’, after field information updates);
- design of typical and special foundations;
- design of earthing system;
- emission of drawings in P&P – Plant and Profile of TL;
- analysis of soil investigation;
- definition of legs, foundations and earthing for each TL structure;
- elaboration of the BOQ (list of the main components) of TL (structures, insulator strings, cables, etc.);
- elaboration of the descriptive technical Mmemorial of the TL;
- design of regular crossings on rivers, on highways and railways, over and under other TLs;
- analysis of structural projects of towers (carried out by other companies);
- analysis of the projects of insulator strings, fittings and hardware;
- technical advisory in the definition and analysis of prototype tests of structures;
- emission of the “construction list”;
- study and calculation of the cable stringing table (tension and sags) and off-set corrections;
- emission of the revision “as built”.
